Close in days, not weeks: what changes when reasoning sits under the ledger

The month-end close is the ritual every finance team dreads. Accountants spend three to five days - sometimes two weeks - matching bank statements, chasing missing invoices, reconciling inter-company balances and running down entries parked in a holding account. The irony is that most of the information is already in the books. It is the reading and reasoning that takes time.

An Enterprise Reasoning Platform changes the equation. In Kinnow, journal entries are not just stored; agents read them the moment they post. A Close Checklist agent watches your main ledger continuously. It flags items that have not been matched, spots duplicate postings, notices when an accrual is missing its reversal and checks that what group companies owe each other nets to zero. By the time the calendar turns, most of the heavy lifting is done.

What the agents actually do

The key shift is from one big push at month-end to steady work all month. Traditional ERPs ask the team to start reconciling on the first or second of the month. Kinnow's agents start on the day the entry posts. A Bank Reconciliation agent matches incoming credits against outstanding invoices as the bank statement arrives. A Receivables agent flags receipts that cannot be auto-allocated - for instance, a lump-sum payment from a customer that covers three invoices - and proposes the split for a person to approve.

Accruals are another area where agents save days. An expense accrual that should have been posted in September but was missed does not wait for someone to notice during the October close. The agent that reads purchase orders and goods receipts spots the gap: goods received, invoice not yet in. It drafts the accrual entry and sets it aside for review.

The promoter's dashboard on day two

For a business owner or CFO, the close is not about bookkeeping - it is about answers. How did we do? Where is the cash? Which customers owe us? In a traditional close, those answers arrive on day ten or day fifteen, long after they are useful. When agents have been reconciling throughout the month, the numbers are substantially ready on day one. A promoter looking at one combined view across seven companies - common in Indian business groups - can see the picture before the weekend.

What still needs a person

Agents propose; people decide. A foreign-exchange revaluation, a provision for a doubtful receivable, a decision about capitalising versus expensing a cost - these are judgement calls. The agents bring up the data, draft the entry and hand it over with the background. The chartered accountant or CFO reviews, adjusts and posts it. The combination is faster than either working alone, because the preparation is done and the decision-maker is not wading through spreadsheets to find the question.

The result

Businesses using Kinnow's month-end close report that what once took eight to twelve working days can be done in two to three. The saving is not just time. It is the quality of decisions made with numbers that are still fresh, not stale. When the books have reasoning underneath them, the close stops being a project and becomes a checkpoint.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kinnow automate the entire close?

No. Agents handle reconciliation, matching and accrual drafting. Judgement calls - provisions, revaluations, reclassifications - stay with the finance team. Agents prepare and propose; people review and approve.

Which ledger entries do agents read?

Every journal entry posted to your main ledger, including the postings that come from sales, purchases, payroll and banking. The agents work on the live record, not on a copy or an export.

Can this work for a group with several companies?

Yes. Kinnow combines the books of several companies and takes out what they trade with each other. The Close Checklist agent checks that those balances net to zero before the close begins.

What if each company uses a different chart of accounts?

Kinnow lets you match each company's accounts to one group chart, so they roll up into combined reports. Agents work at both levels.
