| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 14% from 1 April 2025 |
| British Columbia | GST plus PST | 5% + 7% |
| Saskatchewan | GST plus PST | 5% + 6% |
| Manitoba | GST plus RST (retail sales tax) | 5% + 7% |
Canadian terms, in plain words
| Term | In plain words |
|---|---|
| GST and HST | GST is the federal sales tax. In some provinces it is combined with the provincial tax into one harmonised tax, HST, collected and returned to the federal authority. |
| PST and RST | Provincial sales taxes charged on top of GST in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. |
| Input tax credit | The GST/HST you paid on business purchases, which you can usually claim back against the tax you collected. Provincial sales tax is generally a cost, not a credit. |
| Business Number | The number the federal authority gives your business, with an account for GST/HST. |
| CPP, EI and income tax | Pension, insurance and tax amounts taken from pay. |
| T4 | The yearly slip that reports an employee's pay and deductions. |
| PIPEDA | The federal privacy law for businesses. |
What Kinnow prepares for you
Each area below starts from early 2027. Each row says what Kinnow does and when it starts.
| Area | What Kinnow does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Indirect tax (GST/HST) | The groundwork to work out GST, HST and provincial tax per invoice line from the customer's province, and to build a summary of taxable sales and tax collected for the GST/HST return, is completed before launch. It is a summary, not a return. | From early 2027 |
| E-invoicing | There is no national e-invoicing rule in Canada, so there is nothing to send. Kinnow does not invent one. | Not applicable |
| Payroll statutory | CPP, EI, income tax and T4 slips are confirmed together with early-access customers. Payroll stays with your current provider in the first release. | Confirmed with early-access customers |
| Data protection | Applies consent, retention and erasure rules under PIPEDA. Financial records that the law makes you keep stay in place when someone asks to be erased. | From early 2027 |
